Interested in knowing how the construction of skyscrapers has evolved over time? Discovered by Freshome on Archdaily, these charts below unveil the number of 200+ buildings constructed in each year from 1920 to 2013, as well as the projected number of mega-structures in the following two years (a growing trend can be perceived). Moreover, the annual review from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat informs that 2013 was the second-most successful year ever (after 2011) for skyscraper construction with a total of 73 buildings over 200 meters.

74 percent of worldwide skyscraper completions in 2013 (almost three quarters!) were in Asian countries, with a record-breaking 53 skyscrapers built in 2013.  Asia currently accommodates 45 percent of the tallest buildings in the world. With 37 skyscrapers of over 200 meters spread across 22 different cities, China takes the lead. South Korea is also mentioned in the statistics, with nine skyscrapers completed in the last year.

Among the findings of the report is the sum of heights of all 200-meter-plus buildings completed in 2013, which was 17,662 meters – also the second highest in history, behind the 2011 record of 21,642 meters. The tallest building completed last year was JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai Tower 2 in Dubai, UAE (355-meter). As a surprising fact, of the 73 buildings over 200 meters completed in 2013, only one, 1717 Broadway in New York, was in the United States.
